day of awesomeness
this is what makes an awesome day in my world.
got up early and went with my mom to the lotto place for her form signing, picture taking and cheque collecting.
awesome... but not directly beneficial for me...
but still cool to take part in.
then, got on the skytrain and bus to east hastings street to the international chinese restaurant for delicious dim sum
it rocked.
j and i and his friend shared 11 or so different dishes... most of which were mysterious to me, since i like "white girl dim sum" like har gow, sui mai and bbq pork buns.
but we kind of just took whatever was offered to us off the cart and asked few questions.

it worked out quite well.
we stuffed ourselves full and it only cost $33 for the whole table.
awesome.
i'd go back there for sure.
then we got on the bus down hastings street and got off at main.
oh main and hastings. so... charming.

you know... and allow me to sidebar here for a second...
the downtown eastside may not be a bed of roses... but i'm going to have to go with hot hot heat on this one..
"ugly or pretty, it's still my city. say what you will, but get in or get out"
i love the downtown eastside, warts and all.
it's part of what makes vancouver what it is.
and i do not fear it in any way.
there's loads of people that would never ever get off the bus in this area, let alone walk across the street and wait for another bus.
but it's not unsafe.
it's just full of a reality that most people don't want to admit exists.
and frankly i think it's good to have an accurate view of what that reality is.
because how are we ever going to help these people, if most of us ignore their existence?
anyways.
so then we got on the #3 main.
well, j and i did anyways... his friend stayed on the hastings bus heading downtown...

(which did not look anything like this because it was pouring rain yesterday. but you get the idea)
and we headed up main street to the legion!
specifically to the Army & Navy Taurus Unit #298 on main and 23rd

hells ya.
you might wonder what would make two folks in their late 20's / early 30's want to go to the legion on a rainy tuesday afternoon...
well, first off, we're both unemployed. so what's better than a day of drinking at the legion?
but secondly (and mostly) there's BINGO!

we were the only people there under 60...
but it was mega mega awesome.
not only did we play bingo for 3 hours... but we entered the meat draw (MEAT DRAW!!!!) and played their 50/50 and all the other bar games.
this place had it all.
keno, pull tabs, pool tables, bingo, meat draws...
and cheap ass beer.
that bottle of pilsner pictured above was $3
my strongbow was $4
glasses of draft beer were $1.50
there was so much awesome it could barely be contained.
when it was over and we headed home... they thanked us for coming and said that they always love having new faces.
so we're totally going back.
every tuesday from 1:30pm - 5pm.
and as if that day couldn't get any better...
then i came back home and went for dinner with my mom...
we had a $300 seafood dinner... crab and lobster and spot prawns and other assorted goodies.
it was fucking magic.
i fucking rule at life.

I am Cassie's jealousy. As you would expect.

I completely agree with your comments about the DTES. I work in the area, and walk through it all every day. Reality is one of the best ways to describe it - and it needs a lot more, and different, attention than it gets.
Props for having two amazing meals PLUS bingo in the same day! So jealous!
